Starting in 5717 (1957), Rabbi Odesser initiated a correspondance with the President of Israel, Mr. Zalman Shazar, to urge him to return to G-d and, specifically, to embrace the teachings of Rabbi Nachman. President Shazar, who had been raised in a religious family but later strayed from the path of Jewish observance, eventually accepted Rabbi Odesser's advice, becoming an observant Jew and a follower of Rabbi Nachman. Mr. Shazar, who, as a President, had been the object of much wrath from religious Jewry because of his intensely secular policies, once remarked that if Rabbi Nachman's teachings could influence him they could influence anyone. Rabbi Odesser's letters to President Shazar, spanning some sixteen years (1957-1973), were originally published by President Shazar himself and recently were republished in the book, Ibey Hanachal. Master of the World, You know the greatness of the obligation to travel to the True Tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, and You also know the powerfully numerous obstacles that oppose us from all sides. You who pity the destitute, have pity and spare us; help us to merit to break all the obstacles, and instruct us in Your ways and guide us in truth and teach us, that we shall merit to go and travel to the True Tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, so that we may merit through him to have a truly holy mind.
